How do I get my dogface puffer to stop eating my live stuff?
I have a dogface puffer with a yellow tailed damsel and a blue damsel. He eats everything. The food I feed him, mushrooms, rock anemones, algae, and rock hitch hikers. I know that all these grom because I have some huge ones inside my protein skimmer. Is there a way to get him to stop.
Puffers are not reef safe fish in general. There are a few extremely small puffers which CAN be housed in a reef tank with corals and inverts, however even then its not a sure bet that they wont bother the inverts or corals. Puffers in general are aggressive fish and their diet consists of inverts, mainly snails. They can and will eat any snail you put in your tank, and they will nip at inverts such as hermits and corals. There isn't really any way to make him stop this behavior. You can try to break up your feedings to multiple smaller feedings versus one large one each day. Feed the same amount just in smaller quantities multiple times. This may cut down on some of the aggression, however it may have no affect. Most puffers just nip at corals and inverts Simply because its in their disposition. Sometimes, rarely, you will get a puffer which has doesn't have the traits previously mentioned, however its very rare and generally won't happen. If you want a reef tank, and planned on one, then it would be in your best interest to remove the puffer. If you don't have a secondary appropriately sized tank to hold him, then you can take him back to the store.
