Mayflies - The Most Exciting of Flies?

Its reasonable to state that from each and every one the various flies available to fly fishermen, the mayfly family has to be amongst the most well-liked and well known.  Pleasing on the angler's eye, but they're most significantly vastly fascinating towards the rainbows! It supports us if we understand a little more regarding the life cycle along with way of life of the mayfly to ensure when fishing we are able to better take in this family of flies and then turn that into maximising the chance to catch that rainbows! Hence here we go.

Mayflies are insects which belong to the Order Ephemeroptera (from the Greek ephemeros = "short-lived", pteron = "wing", bearing on the short life span of adults). The life cycle of the mayfly begins once after a few weeks, the egg changes into a nymph.  It in fact needs an added year before they mature.  As perhaps you know, there are various names to the different sorts of mayflies & different names including their emergence stage in line with species:  - Agile Darter,  Slit Burrower, March Brown,  Blue winged olive, Epherma danica, Blue winged olive imago, Blue winged olve dun and Baetis spinner to name a few.  All of those has a differing life-style with the purpose of matching it's environment as you'd expect.  But it is with a young nymph that each of those species adapts plus creates lifestyles to fit their environment.

When the nymph (or naiad as it could possibly be known) emerges, it might probably live between a few months to many years.  It may have potentially loads of moults along the way.  The naiads subsist primarily in streams underneath rocks, putrefying plant life, or contained in the sediment. And at its ultimate moult that it becomes a sub imago or dun. Apparently the word dun means dull brown and this word very much describes the look of a mayfly sub imago.  It might resemble the shape of its adult form, but as a sub imago is really dull in colour, a inadequate flyer and sexually immature. It would be the lack of color and patterns which means  it's not attractive to mates.  The sub imago stage is brief and never longer than 24 hours. However maybe drastically shorter in a quantity of species.

When it becomes an adult, its single purpose in living is to produce offspring. This striking living thing may be alive barely for a few hours, certainly no more than twenty four hrs. Therefore once they have mated, the female lays her eggs and dies becoming what is known as spent.  The whole rotation then begins over again.

It is rather remarkable to note that the short lifetime of the mayfly is represented in it's name in different languages around the world and interprets literally as one-day-fly!  A few examples of this are - German Eintagsfliege, Dutch eendagsvlieg, Slovenian enodnevnica, Swedish dagslända, Danish and Norwegian døgnflue, Polish jętka jednodniówka, Finnish päivänkorento, Bulgarian еднодневка, and Greek εφήμερος.

It often comes about that each one of the mayflies inside a population mature at once (the hatch), and for a day or two at spring or autumn, mayflies can be everywhere, dancing around one another in huge groups, or resting on all accessible surface and that is a view to watch plus one which anglers all over look forward to.
