Braided Loops

"What's your policy on men wearing make-up?"
As a Flight Attendant (with our airline at least), there were endless required seminars to attend-on various topics. With one or two exceptions, they always involved subject matter presented in such superfluous detail, I really would have preferred to have had my head in a vice during that part of my day. One such workshop was entitled "Appearance Standard." It was focused on all the details of our (ever-"improving") airline-mandated requirement for our outward presentation of company first, then self-trailing far behind. To the chagrin and offense of most Flight Attendants, for the first several years of my employment with the airline, we were subjected to yearly weigh-ins. If you were over your target window (that was set by the airline), you were put on probation, and then subjected to a monthly weigh-in until you met the requirement. At our "Appearance Standard" meeting with company management, one of our brethren raised her hand and asked how grown women and men could in good conscience be forced to submit to this kind of humiliation-or face the prospect of losing your job? The rest of us nervously shifted in our seats hoping for some mollifying explanation from one of the executives-along the lines of "We're concerned that you eat and exercise appropriately, and take care of your health," or "We want to make sure you don't get stuck in a window exit during an emergency evacuation." However, the party line response that came back-without a moment's hesitation-was "It's an Appearance Standard-nothing more."
The weight requirement was a Queen Bee in Lynne's bonnet. It lit a fire under her, like no other topic. One layover, the Flight Attendants and Pilots (a phrase uttered so frequently, it often came out as "Plight Attendants and Flylots"), anyway, we all went out for a beer together, and the weight requirement topic was broached. Lynne didn't stop talking for half an hour about how demeaning it was, and how we all should stand up and revolt against the oppression. Norma Rae was so passionate about the issue compared with the rest of us, we just sat there listening and nodding.
The Pilots always had a list of the Flight Attendant names on their crew posted on the controls in the cockpit, and the next day, as we were chatting with them (same crew from the layover), we saw that the Co-Pilot had drawn a picture of the scales of justice in the middle of a big circle with a huge diagonal line slashed across it, next to Lynne's name. ‘Roger that, Lynne. Read you loud and clear. Negative on the weigh-ins. Over.'
A year or so after this, there was some legal wrangling involving a class action suit with a different airline, and the weight portion of our "Appearance Standard" was dropped. Our management team went into a frenzy to somehow legally compensate for the hideous carnival freaks which I'm sure they thought would inevitably appear without a certified Supervisor monitoring each of our girths. The brass then implemented a new "Appearance Standard." There was a Draconian document written up and distributed to every Flight Attendant detailing what was now expected of us-appearance wise. It was written in such minutiae that everything literally from the soles and type of your shoes up to the top of your head, had to fit in a rigid box, or you were written up and the disgraceful, repulsive element of your exterior had to be corrected before you could leave on your trip. Management actually set up a daïs by the sign-in desk in the Flight Attendant lounge, that was staffed by Supervisors-former Flight Attendants-who flew about once a year, to keep their status current. Believe me if you flew with a Supervisor who was on her or his yearly sojourn into the skies, it was cringe making. They had not the first correct idea about how to proceed. Anyway, a Flight Attendant would walk into the lounge to start your trip, set down your bags, and were forced to head immediately over to the Gestapo desk and-I shite you not-execute a heel turn, while the Commandant stood from her or his chair to look you up and down, front and back. It was a bad way to begin your voyage, and truly made you want to Ninja kick them. I remember one male Flight Attendant being in line in front of me for his inspection, asking a member of the Secret Police "What is your policy on men wearing make-up?" That has to be the greatest freaking thing I've ever heard.
The SS Officer replied stonily "Women wear make-up, men don't."
This was where the Battle of the Ponytail began between a Supervisor named Suzette and myself. I was fortunate that I always passed the asinine inspection at sign-in, however, there was a Supervisor who didn't work the Appearance Desk, but would come out from behind her glassed-in, bulletproof? Supervisor Station, every time she saw me walk in the lounge, to tell me that my hair was not in regulation. The first couple times, I pointed out to her that I had just passed the Gestapo inspection. But, she wasn't deterred. My hair was very long, and we weren't allowed to have "swinging" pony tails. I would braid my hair and then tuck it up underneath and secure the "swinging end" back to the hair band to make a braided loop. Suzette swore that this was still a pony tail, and suggested that perhaps I should consider wearing a "HAIR NET!" Now, let me be perfectly frank, the only way that you would ever find me wearing a hair net, would be if someone shot me with a tranquilizer gun and stretched its little edges around my comatose head, while I was unable to stop them. This suggestion sparked the nickname for haranguing Suzette, of "Hairnette," amongst my friends. She would be forever labeled with this moniker, as far as we were concerned. I would ignore Hairnette's protestations, and grab my bags and head up to my trip, just knowing she was going to write me up, though she never did. It happened again and again. Honestly, she was like a Bloodhound bitch, when I would walk in that lounge, her head would shoot up and out she would come after me. Finally, I had had enough of ‘Hairnette's School of Cosmetology.' As she came at me for the zillionth time, I said "Look, Hair…Suzette, you are the only one EVER who has had a problem with my hair style. Why don't we get a different Supervisor's opinion?" Well, it just so happened that the Base Manager (Hairnette's boss) was standing around the corner, and we approached her.
‘En garde.'
The Base Manager had me turn around and said "That's not a pony tail. A pony tail is something that swings. You look great, Lori. Have a good trip."
‘Touché.'
‘Hairnette, you've been run through.' I don't believe Hairnette and I ever had any business with each other after that.
One section of the new Appearance Standard pertained to types, amounts, and placements of jewelry. It stated that a female Flight Attendant could wear one earring only in each ear. Male Flight Attendants were forbidden to wear any earrings, but both genders could wear a watch, two rings, and one necklace-total. Though the male Flight Attendants were explicitly told that if they wore a necklace, they had to have it tucked inside their buttoned up shirt. What was the point of including that part, if you weren't even going to see it? It would be like regulating undergarments. Although, in point of fact, underclothing was addressed in the Appearance Standard, but only for women. It specified that female Flight Attendants were "required to wear appropriate foundation garments." I suppose management didn't care if the male Flight Attendants walked around free riding.
Lynne generally wore somewhere between five to ten earrings in one of her ears-from the lower lobe all the way up to the very top of her ear. One Captain, who was obviously very hip and happening, noticed Lynne's bedazzled ear. Due to his extensive aviation training, he instantly recognized this as a critical safety hazard, and told the Lead Flight Attendant that he wanted Lynne to remove all her earrings except for the conventional one per ear. Lynne was reprimanded about her unsightliness, and took all the earrings out of her extra bejeweled appendage, except for the one at the apex (the highest and most rebellious offender). I'm sure the Captain had envisioned Lynne seeing the error of her wicked ways, at his behest, and removing all of her iconoclastic hardware and replacing them with a subtle five millimeter pair of pearls studs, one only in each lower lobe. Like any self-respecting woman would be seen wearing in public.
The deviant auricle was on her left side, so Lynne made a point to take the Captain his breakfast and hand him his tray, leaning over him with her naughty left ear right in his face.
‘See-ee, jerk awff, ownly one earring.'

There is a psychiatric/psychological diagnosis called "Folie a Plusieurs," which is a French phrase literally meaning "Madness has Several." This disorder was first discovered by French Mental Health Professionals, thus the French name. The illness may occur when people are so enmeshed with each other they actually adopt the psychosis or psychoses of their companions.
The imagery which the phrase~Madness has Several~evokes, for me, is simply enchanting.
This is my portal into my own folie and joy. I am a former Flight Attendant for a major U.S. airline, where I traversed the globe for eight years. As a natural progression, I then went into Psychiatric Research at a State Psychiatric Hospital, where I (under the tutelage of the Psychiatrist for whom I worked-along with a team of colleagues), was a published author concerning such hot button issues as "Total Cotinine in Plasma: A Stable Biomarker for Exposure to Tobacco Smoke." Have you read it? That one stayed a little below the non-scientific community's radar. But, then came "Initiation of Daily Smoking and Nicotine Dependence in Schizophrenia and Mood Disorders." After this one leapt off the presses, I was lucky to be able to make it through the grocery store without hordes of photographers and autograph seeking, chain-smoking, mentally ill persons obstructing my path.
Currently, I am a Stay Home, HomeSchooling Mother to a ten year old Human Boy, a four year old Bloodhound Boy, and a six year old Retired Racing Greyhound Boy. My Husband (also a Boy), Jonathan, and I have been married for 15 years.
They are my treasures.
I also write. Here is my lens for the epoch we all (every presence) share-past, present, and, God willing, future. These are my hopes, ruminations, and of course, delirious thoughts…but what always burns most vividly is the beautiful laughter.
Détenir sur étroite à la folie avec mon âme folle ma pretties.

What kind of hairstyle is this?
I've seen this hairstyle in a buncha animes, and I'm just wondering if it's a normal style in Japan or something...

There are like, braid-loop-pigtail-thingy's...
It looks like she has done two plaits behind her ears and then looped them and pinned them back, leaving the fringe loose. If you wanted to do this you would have to plait around a piece of bent wire in that shape and spray it.
Actually the plaits seem loose, you dont need the wire.
