Fly Fishing - The Sport of Kings

In the past, fly-fishing was widely regarded as an elitist form of fishing, complicated, mysterious, and above all expensive. Fortunately, this is no longer the case. Anglers who seek convenience fly-fishing are catered for by abundant small stillwaters, which offer rest value for money and an opportunity to hook hard-fighting fish.

If this style of fishing does not suit, then the tranquillity and solidarity of wild brown trout awaits, a species synonymous with fly-fishing. Migratory species such as salmon require far more dedication than stocked or even wild trout, but there can be no denying that many novice fly anglers make their inaugural casts with this, the ''king of fish, '' at the forefront of their minds. The natural progression is the pursuit of sea trout during the twilight hours-a magical form of fly-fishing that can quickly turn into an obsession. But it is not all about game fish. Fly-fishing has exploded onto the coarse and sea fishing scene, becoming increasingly recognised as a legitimate way to target species such as bass and pike.

A Carp and pike are highly respected by coarse anglers, due to both their size and fighting ability. These powerful fish represent a serious opponent to fly-fishers and a great chance of taking a double figure fish on ultra lightweight tackle. Pike flies such as the Bunny Bug are designed to resemble baitfish and should be cast in conjunction with a wire bite guard to protect against the pike's impressive dentures.

Many carp have been weaned on to pellet baits such as dog biscuits during their lives in a commercial coarse fishery. Dog biscuit flies fashioned from deer hair fibers are the best approach! In some circumstances, carp will be seen to take natural flies such as daddy longlegs or mayflies off the surface, in which case an appropriate representation may provoke a take.

The sporting nature of fly-fishing is also alluring. When a fish takes an artificial fly, it transmits a signal along the line that is felt on the hand, sending a sudden rush of adrenaline around the angler's body. Upon feeling a hook, the unseen force snaps the line tight, which now whistles through the rod rings persuading a primitive reel to scream in agreement. A deep curve appears in a flexible rod that records every lunge, dive, and leap! This is the moment that every fly-angler craves.

The tackle that earns fly-fishing its sporting title is also highly mobile, easily stored in a purpose-built pack or bag, ready for the next exhilarating journey to the water's edge. A well-stocked fly box also means that there is no need to purchase, digs, or prepare bait prior to each session! This liberating style of fishing is the perfect way to enjoy a whole day or even just a few hours, stowing tackle in the boot of a car ready for action whenever possible.

But these wonderful experiences can be marred by tragedy. Never cast a fly without wearing adequate head and eye protection-the consequences can be irreversible. Accidents are rare but the very best way to avoid any costly mistakes is to learn how to cast correctly and safely. A casting instructor will provide a great starting point, and further practice in fields or packs will soon lead to a consistent cast.

The rhythmical casting motion is all part of fly-fishing's therapeutic qualities but needs to be matched with an understanding of the habitat of the fish to be pursued, their diet, and behavior. Once all these factors come together, the opportunities that fly-fishing present are seemingly endless.
