Fly Fishing - Catching Trout in the Early Season April to May

There are many misconceptions about fly fishing. To many it is considered an elitist sport, only accessible to the very rich who can afford to pay big money for the privilege of fishing the clear chalk stream rivers in some of the country's most beautiful countryside.

It is also often thought that to be successful you need to be an entomologist and be able to recognise every insect in the water you are fishing, and then create an exact replica to put on your fly line to catch trout!

Whilst the first premise has a small amount of truth, the second has none. True, money will get you onto some superb waters, and a detailed knowledge of insects will improve your chances of catching quality trout, but there is plenty of fly fishing available that costs no more than an ordinary course fishing day ticket water, and a detailed knowledge of insects is not necessary to catch trout. However, a little knowledge is useful, and this article will give some idea as to the flies to use from April to June.

This is a great time of year for fly fishing. Early April will see hatches of the Large Dark Olive, and the Medium Olive if the winter has been a cold one, with the caddis and sedges appearing mid to late April.

The caddis and sedges are particularly good news as they tend to thrash around on the surface of the water, which attracts the trout and gets them feeding.

May sees a whole range of flies appearing. The Medium Olives continue hatching from early April right through May, and are joined by the small Dark Olive a few more sedges and one of the most famous flies, the Iron Blue. The Iron Blue is very small, often less than a centimetre, with upswept wings and rather than being blue, appears to be black on the surface of the water.

Another famous fly also appears, the Pale watery Dun. If funds are limited, concentrate on the Iron Blue and Olives rather than the Pale Watery Dun, as trout will generally take the other flies in preference.

May also sees "spinners" appear. An upwinged fly which lies on top of the water. This is because the term "spinner" refers to a fly that has returned to the water to lay its eggs and die, the body floating to the surface. These are often popular with trout in the evening.

Up to the end of May, there is often little activity fish wise before mid morning. However, June heralds the start of day long feeding for the trout. It can be a time of early rises for both the fly fisher and his quarry as summer begins.

All the flies mentioned above can be purchased by name so you don't have to tie them yourself. You will probably want to experiment with other flies as well, but be sure to keep a stock of the flies listed here in your fly box.

I have 2 cats that i have been keeping inside because i do not want them to eat those babies (4) BUT IT IS A STRUGGLE, as they must have feel those birds.
