Going Beyond the Different Surgical Instruments during Surgery
In a common surgical tray you can find the knife, forceps which include the tissue and the thumb, scissors, needle which is used for the surgical suture, curved clamp, straight clamp, allis, and towel clip; these are the usual pieces that a surgeon uses for any operation which is why almost all pre-prepared sets contain the above mentioned instruments. surgical suture needle during cases wherein additional items are needed, just ask the circulating nurse and they will be in charge in looking for that particular piece and in handing it to you. Other instruments include the cautery tip, cautery machine, deaver, army navy, Richardson, asepto syringe, and the like. In major cases including caesarian section, gastric resection, and exploratory laparotmoy, the surgical instruments are often bigger because of the size of the areas where the surgery is being done; while in minor cases, surgeons only make use of the smaller sized materials.
Each surgical instrument should be handled using the sterile technique. This technique means that if you are the circulating nurse you are supposed to use forceps soaked in an antiseptic solution to handle the autoclaved instrument; never use your bare hands because you can introduce microorganisms which can cause infection to the open wound; but if you are the surgeon or the assistant nurse, you should perform the correct hand washing, scrubbing, and gloving techniques, you are also expected to wear a surgical gown which also underwent the process of autoclaving. During the entire operation, all members of the healthcare team involved should all work within the sterile field to prevent cross contamination that can endanger the patient's ability to return to his/ her normal state. Furthermore, in case the sterile field is breached, the member involved should scrub out and perform the whole sterile process in order to enter the theatre and be a part of the team once again. These measures are strictly being implemented because it is the healthcare team's priority to help the patient reach his/ her optimal functioning after the surgery.
There are various protocols for every hospital or healthcare institutions but it is essential that in all operating procedures, the team should make use of sterile surgical instruments at all time regardless of the race, financial status, economic status, age, gender, and religion of the patient being operated on. So it doesn't matter what instrument they use on you when you undergo a surgical operation, what matters most is that the whole operating team should do their tasks in a manner that will help the patient instead of endanger him/ her.
