What would be a good gear ratio for my 81 cj7?

Right now I am running Dana 44s front and rear with a 4.10 gear ratio on 35" tires but I am thinking of going to 37" tires later. Would the 4.10 turn the 37" as good as the 35" or should I go to a lower setup like a 4.27 or a 4.56. Which one would be the best all around ratio for driving around town and 4-wheeling on the weekends.

4.27 will keep you close to the same performance you've got now. 4.56 is a little better but still not great (better gas mileage but a little low on power). If you want to get back to factory specs then go with 4.88s. If you want a little more low speed power then you could push on out to 5.29s (gas mileage will suck though). One thing about your axles is that dana 44s come with 2 different sized carriers. One is for 4.88s and down (numerically) while the other is for above 4.88s.
