Welcome Anglers and Flytyers to Finland!
Angling and Flytying came to Finland by english businessmen and fishing tourists in the 1800s. At first almost all the flies were tied for brown trouts and grayling fishes and by the time for salmons.
In Finland everything started in the city of Kajaani, north of Finland, by Herman Renfors´s daughter Maria Renfors, who was studying the art of flytying at Hardy factories in England, in 1875. A Kajaani citizen, a forrester called Oskari Ronka, learnt the skills of flytying from Maria Renfors.
Afterwards there have been many skillful tyers as a pharmacist Vilho Saaristo, a colonel Matti Tiitola, my father a colonel and a newspaperman Erkki Vaalama. Other finnish skillful tyers are such as Walter Aunesluoma, Toivo makinen, Veli Autti and Lauri Syrjanen.
Nowadays, the so called classical art of flytying is not so popular in Finland. But there are some who want to maintain this art of classical flies. The classical fly has to be a low structure pattern, neutral in colours and balanced.
The most popular salmon rivers in Finland are Teno River, Tornio River, Oulanka River and Kymi River. Because Finland is the land of thousands of lakes and rivers there is a variety of possibilities for angling. You are welcome to Finland and when You fish You´ll get a glimpse of the most beautiful and peaceful wildlife and wilderness of Finland.
If You want to see some of the flies tied by my father, called Erkki vaalama, go to Google by the search word "Erkki Vaalama" and You´ll see the most artistical salmon fly patterns tied by him. The most famous and popular of his flies is so called "Teno 12 serie of salmon flies". My father who is on of the most famous flytyers in Finland and in Europe, he is 91 years old now and living in the city of Kajaani, where all started, has taught the art of flytying to me. I am 58 years old engineer and violinist, called Antti Vaalama and living in the city of Heinola, south of Finland. I am always helpful to help You to come for angling and tying flies in Finland.

I'm new to fly fishing, and was wondering where to fly fish on the ausable this spring. I would be doing it in the grayling/ gaylord area. If you have any pointers for fly fishing in general, feel free to chip in.
