im new to fly tying, i need help with hackle!?

basically when im tying flys i have pretty much finished but i still have to put the dreaded hackle on. so my thread is at the eye of the hook. the hackle is attached a little lower down the shaft of the hook. so i wrap it around with my hackle pliers then when i get to the end i find it really hard to tie it off. no matter how many times i wrap my thread around the end it sometimes just comes off. its really annoying and it makes a mess fo the fly. is there an easyer way to tie off hackles or is there a much simpler way. i see people bend the hackle back but my fingers wont fit around it. its really confusing. anyone got any tips to get my hackle looking good? thanks

First off don't worry about it! lots of beginners new to fly tying have this problem, i was recently invited to my local fly shop to help the owner teach the dry fly tying class he was holding. Ive noticed this is a big problem for a lot of beginners, so you aren't the only one!

First you need to ensure you leave adequate space to tie off your hackle, often two turns is enough, you will see beginners winding way to much thread on to secure the hackle.

Next thing, you need a hackle guard, this slides over the hackle after you have locked it with the thread wrap, then allows you to create a taper, build up a head and whip finish with ease.

*you can make one of these with the pen top from a biro pen,, cut of the clip and make a hole to allow the hook eye to slip through, in turn this will push your hackle back, you can also buy them.*

Next tip is, dont wind on too many turns of the hackle, twice is generally enough, but once again it depends on the fly!

When you secure it, leave the hackle pliers attached, add two thread wraps and remove hackle pliers, then snap the stem off, as opposed to cutting which leaves a small stump.

Slide on your hackle guard and build up a small neat heat then whip finish.

Other tips
Use a finer diameter thread, 8/0 and 6/0 are good for most flies but decrease in size for small dries, you will find it easier.

Rotary hackle pliers will help you a lot when winding on the hackle, plus they give you more space. Add some thin rubber tube to the grips for protection of your hackle.
