Installing Aluminum Fence – Take your time, save time later
You've decided it's time to stop messing around with wood or iron and invest in a long-lasting aluminum fence for your property. Good. You've found a dealer who offers everything you need; posts, gate posts, gate sections, fence sections, and suitable accessories like finials, butterflies, or rings. You've decided on a color (green, white, black, etc) and probably opted in for the powder coating (if not, please consider doing so). In other words, you currently know exactly how long your fence sections will be and how wide your posts are and you can begin planning out your perimeter.
This process should always come before you place your order. Find a suitable dealer, get the measurements you require to plan your perimeter, and then begin a sketched layout and stake your property accordingly. This is common sense stuff, you need to stake where your corner posts, end posts, and gate posts will be. Make sure you remember that Aluminum fence comes in predetermined lengths, so you should try to plan your fence to require as little "shaving" as possible. It's difficult to manipulate aluminum, avoid it if you can. When you are calculating the total length of your fence, make sure to include the individual posts as well. It is very important that your measurements be correct before you place your order.
Once your order has arrived and you're ready to start, begin by digging your post holes. Remember, gate posts should be dug deeper (at least 48") than other posts. Remember, your Gate posts should dry for a week before you put anything on them (they have a lot more pressure to bare than other posts). Generally a post should be dug at least 2 to 3 feet deep. Make sure your string is snug from stake to stake and as straight as possible (perfectly straight preferably). Put your post in the hole and shovel your concrete in around it. Make sure you keep that post straight and snug against your string while you do this. Some of the dirt around the hole can be packed in as well to keep the post snugly in place. Continue doing this for all of your corner, end, and gate posts.
Aluminum fence has no give, so it's important that you take your installation process slowly. Pick a corner, gate, or end post to start with. Measure out your first line post from there and stake it. Remember to include the width of each line post when measuring to the next post. Set out 2 or 3 stakes and then dig your post holes again. Connect your first fence section to your already-set end/corner post and then attach your line post to the other end and set it in your newly dug hole. Pour in your cement and pack that post in. You have a little bit of room to move your fence section at this point because the cement isn't totally dry...use this time well to measure and balance your fence. Move on to the next section and repeat. By the time you have a few sections done, your cement should be dry enough for you to continue on. Always remember to check and recheck your level to maintain a straight fence.
