Silver Spring in the Summer
Summer is officially here, and there's no better way to enjoy the season than getting outside and soaking up some sun—and local flavor. The Washington DC Metro area is home to countless outdoor festivals, concerts and neighborhood events taking place all summer long.
Movies on the Potomac
Enjoy moonlit entertainment at the National Harbor in Maryland. Every Friday and Saturday evening this summer, the harbor is showing movies along the waterfront on an outdoor screen. Films begin just after sunset, and admission is free! Friday night flicks are "Date Night" themed; think, The Social Network, The Blind Side, and Inception. Sundays are family friendly: How to Train Your Dragon, Megamind, and Shrek Forever After, just to name a few. Don't forget to bring your own chairs and blankets!
Nationals Games
Catch a baseball game at Nationals Park, where tickets start at just $10! The "bull pen", directly across from the stadium, provides fans over the age of 21 with pre-game entertainment in the form of bands, games, and a mechanical bull. The new Nationals Park not only redefines modern sports facility architecture but also serves as the catalyst and cornerstone of a new mixed-use Capitol Riverfront in our nation's capital. Grab an Original Half Smoke from Ben's Chili Bowl or a curly "W" soft pretzel from NJ's Pretzel's—but make sure to keep one hand free for fly balls.
Live Music
Kick off the summer concert season with the Live Jazz Series at the Mazza Gallerie. These free jazz concerts are scheduled on Saturdays of each month throughout the year, from 4 until 6 pm. The performances take place on the mezzanine between Pampillonia Jewelers and Ann Taylor, and the sounds resound throughout the shopping center. Not enough jazz for you? Head to the National Gallery of Art's Sculpture Garden. The museum's (also free!) "Jazz in the Garden" series features an array of jazz artists performing a range of styles—from swing to progressive to Latin. Wolftrap in Vienna, VA is another great venue to catch a variety of performances. Dolly Parton, Disney in Concert, a Reggae festival, and Lynyrd Skynyrd—there's something to appeal to everyone.
Food Festivals
There's only one affordable and efficient way to sample dishes from the best restaurants in the city: Washingtonian Magazine's Best of Washington event in July. At the National Building Museum, over 50 booths are set up, where celebrated chefs, including Michel Richard of Citronelle and Central, Robert Wiedmaier of Marcels and Brasserie Beck, Tony Conte of the Oval Room, Scott Drewno of the Source by Wolfgang Puck, and Mike Isabella of Zaytinya and Top Chef Fame, serve up creative dishes and inspired cocktails.
