Family Santo Tomas Holidays in Menorca
You'll find the resort of Santo Tomas on the south coast of Menorca. Holidays here benefit from a beautiful long stretch of sandy beach and the delight of staying in one of the Menorca villas in the region.
Santo Tomas is a town constructed with Menorca holidays in mind. In the winter, when there are no holidaymakers here, the population of the town is barely more than fifty; but of course, during the holiday season, when the hot Mediterranean sun comes out, this swells to the size of a small town.
This resort is popular with families; there's plenty in Santo Tomas holidays to keep everyone amused: you can take pedalos out onto the blue sea, or for a faster pace, ride a banana boat over the waves. There's mini golf operated from the Las Dunas bar, and at the ruins on the Basilica Son Bou, there's a maze to navigate. Of course, the long sandy beach is perfect for sunbathing and sandcastles!
Menorca Villas
Aside from a few hotels the accommodation on this part of the island is focused upon Menorca villas. Santo Tomas has new, well-designed and properly maintained villas. One example of the villas available for your Santo Tomas holidays is simply named B15. This is a detached villa with three bedrooms and modern furnishings. The kitchen has appliances you'll need to support a family, such as washing machine, microwave and dishwasher. And there's a barbecue for when you want to eat outside in the sunshine. For cooling off, there's a kidney-shaped pool that curves around the terrace.
Exploring & Fiestas
It is a good idea to hire a car on your Menorca holiday, so you can better explore the municipality of es Migjorn Gran in which Santo Tomas lies. Like all of Menorca, es Migjorn Gran hosts traditional festivals each year. You might find the Fiesta of Sant Cristòfol to be unusual; as well as the expected parade and music, it is traditional for the local priest to bless each of the local cars. Perhaps if it is mistaken for one belonging to a local resident, your hire car could be blessed, too!
Further to the North in the Mercadal region, the fiestas celebrate the long Menorcan history of horse-riding excellence. The Sant Marti fiesta held here in mid-July is a great spectacle, where riders take their horses through the town and urge them to rear up on their hind legs as the crowds cheer them on.
Caves
But your exploration on your Menorca Holidays should not all be above ground. Menorca has about fifty underground caves. There are so many in such a small area because over time Menorca's porous rock has absorbed, and been eroded by, winter rainwater flowing underground.
The largest of the caves is Sa Cova des Coloms, which has a chamber over a hundred metres in length and a ceiling twenty four metres high. Understandably, it is described as a cathedral cave. 'Sa Cova des Coloms' translates as 'the Cave of Pigeons', named after the many birds that make the dark cave their roost. Strangely, the cave is also used by locals for barbecues.
With sights like these to explore, you should get the best out of your Santo Tomas holidays by stretching your legs and your horizons in the beautiful Menorca countryside. Or just stretch out under the sun on the long beach. However you choose to spend your time, give your family the privacy and space that comes with one of the many quality Menorca villas on the island.
