What Causes Bags Under Eyes::What You Can Do
What causes puffy bags under your eyes could be just a matter of lack of sleep. Or maybe just because of age. Here is what can be done regardless of the cause.
- · Lack of Sleep or Oversleeping
Fatigue will make the area around the eyes swell with fluids. Sometimes that has a negative effect on your vision, as well as the way you look.
On the other hand, being in a prone position for more than 8 hours will cause bodily fluids to be redistributed. They can gather in your face. So, why doesn't your whole face look puffy?
- · Why Anything Causes Eye Bags
While you are learning about the causes of fluid buildup, you might be wondering "why" the fluids or swelling is noticeable primarily in the skin beneath the eyes. The reason has to do with the skin's thickness and layers.
The skin beneath the eyes is thinner than elsewhere on the body and there is less fatty tissue beneath the skin of the eyes. You may notice that there is more protective padding over your cheekbones.
If you touch the area beneath your eyes, the bone feels much closer to the surface. That's because of the differentiation in the distribution of fatty tissue beneath your facial skin. Now, let's get back what can cause the fluid buildup.
- · Illness or Genetics
Younger people who have chronic puffiness or bags beneath their eyes may be ill. For example, they could be suffering from a case of mono. Or, they could simply have a genetic tendency to retain more fluid in that area. While certain illnesses will cause periorbital puffiness in older individuals too, there is usually something else going on.
- · Leaky Blood Vessels
The tiny blood vessels beneath the skin transport fluids and waste products on a constant basis. The fluids can start to leak from the blood vessels as we age, or as a result of poor nutrition.
When bags are accompanied by dark circles, leaky blood vessels are probably a problem. The hemoglobin and waste in the leaked fluids are dark in color.
- · Decreased Production of New Skin Cells
Once we start to get a little older, our bodies stop producing as many new skin cells. Since the skin beneath the eyes is already very thin, this decreased production of skin cells will make any bagging or puffiness more prominent.
- · Sagging Skin
Sagging skin sometimes accompanies the aging process, because the body stops producing as many new elastic fibers. The skin beneath the eyes may start to sag as elasticity is lost. This can look like under-eye bags. Of course, the sagging skin is more likely to fill up with fluids, too.
- · What Do We Do?
It may seem like there is no solution for eye bags, especially as we age. But, there are always solutions to every skin problem. New research is released on a regular basis concerning those solutions. You will learn about them in my next article.

I would like to hear from people who had lasik eye surgery in the last couple of years. Pro and con.?
In particular, I am considering surgery to correct my eyes so that I will have mono-vision. One eye will be for distance and the other for near vision. Has anyone had this done that would like to share their experience?
I had Lasik eye surgery done after wearing glasses for 16 years. It has been perfect for me. I have had no changes. Of course, as I age, I expect changes. I also co-manage refractive surgery and have seen hundreds of successful patients. It doesn't hurt, generally. There is a bit of pressure, but no real pain if you have LASIK. The PRK version (where no flap is cut) is a little more uncomfortable for the first few days following the procedure. I've seen several people who said they were in some pain, but healed just fine. I used to wear both glasses and contact lenses. I had LASIK done and it's the best decision I've ever made. I can see clearly, no squinting, no driving with glasses anymore. I can read road signs, see the individual leaves in the trees (they're not just a blurry mess anymore). It's also nice to be able to see what time it is when I wake up. The procedure is painless (although a bit uncomfortable) but takes less than 15 minutes. Highly recommended.
