Fly Fishing For Trout – Matching the Hatch March To April
There is a certain mystique about fly fishers, a group of individuals apart from the general angling community who have stored up infinite information in their heads regarding the types of fly emerging on the water they are fishing. Not only can they identify the insects, but they can then produce an exact replica to tie on their fly line and instantly hook a fish.
Fly fishers are also thought to have incredible eyesight, amazing skill with the fly rod and line, particularly when casting, and cast a fly to within an inch of the precise spot where a trout is lying, generally into a force eight wind, whilst at the same time puffing on his pipe.
Obviously, this is a total myth, as anyone can become an accomplished fly fisher as fly fishing is in fact in many ways easier to learn than other types of fishing.
However, a certain temperament is required, and not everyone has it, in the same way that not everyone is cut out to be a football player. One has to be prepared to learn, often from sheer experience but reading up on the subject helps too, and talk to other more experienced fishers, most of whom are only too happy to pass on their knowledge of the sport.
The season generally starts in March, with a fly that appears brown in colour, with upswept wings. These flies are the famous March Browns which hatch in great numbers. The hatching never continues for very long, but often results in a feeding frenzy for the trout, particularly after a particularly cold winter when food has been scarce.
With a water where no hatching is taking place, one could be forgiven for thinking that the trout have completely disappeared from the water. The longest stare into the water, even with polarised sun glasses, will often reveal nothing – but the trout are still there.
The reason they often cannot be seen is because they are still quite lethargic having recently spawned, and prefer to lie in deep dark holes in the river or lake, only rising if there is good reason, a hatching for example.
In April two further flies appear – the Large Dark Olive, and if the month is mild, the Medium Olive. The Medium Olive carries on hatching all season, and an imitation of the same is always a useful fall back for the fly fisher if all else has failed!
Some waters start to produce caddis and sedge flies at this time. These flies are really enticing to the trout as they don't simply float to the surface of the water and gently fly away; they make quite a struggle on the surface, which attracts the fish.
Often later in April a fly called the Black Gnat starts hatching, again a fly favoured by the trout.
These then are the first two months of the fly fishing season, the time for ensuring you have a supply of Olives, March Browns and Black Gnats in your fly box.
