Toilet is leaking at base - what caused this?
over the weekend I went with my boyfriend to meet his mother. she lives three hours away so we spent the entire weekend at her house. When I arrived Friday I used the toilet in a guest bathroom. it only had a pedestal sink and the toilet. No trash can. I had no choice but to flush my tampon. On Saturday we spent the day site seeing and when we arrived home the toilet had leaked around the base.
We left on Sunday, before a plumber had arrived. did flushing the tampon cause this?
Yes the tampon can cause this problem by clogging the drain line to the point where it backs up to the point of least resistance which in this case would be the wax ring which in itself is only suppose to stop leakage from gravity drainage not back pressure. The real problem might be a partial clog in the drain line and the tampon only made a potential problem worse. The drain line needs to be snaked not the toilet. First remove toilet, snake down hole in the floor with at least 25' electric snake to clear line completely too stop any further problems. When you are sure line is clear then install new wax ring and replace toilet.
