What is the product in this chemical reaction?
I have a piece of metal (actually a mix of tungsten, cobalt, copper and manganese). Its a simple rectangular piece of metal ok?. Now, the metal was sintered to merge all metals together into one single shiny piece, but we have some stains coming through the metal. almost like dark "spots and streaks". These stains are black/brown. I think one of my metals has oxidized in the process and is extruding through. I believe it to be manganese dioxide.
I have put the metal into hot 20% KOH solution, and have observed a pink layer forming on the stains. Could this confirm my theory and be KMnO4?? The stains disappeared, but once I dried the piece with cloth, they were back within an hour!!
I'd be willing to bet it's impurities in the metal showing through.
I noticed this when working with stainless steel. It makes perfect sense to me, the higher quality the metal the less likely you are to see impurities.
