Keeping Pet Chickens – Chickens Make Great Pets and Provide You With Breakfast Too
There are strange goings on right across the land as thousands of "feathered ladies" strut their stuff in urban backyards. No we are not talking about some new adult pursuit, but the fact that keeping pet chickens has really taken off, probably spurred on by a slump in the economy and the growing awareness of the benefits of green living. The promise of delicious, healthy fresh eggs may also have something to do with it.
So what are the reasons why raising chickens in urban environments has risen so dramatically?
For some it is simply that they do make excellent pets and do not require a great deal of looking after. They are very appealing creatures and many find it quite relaxing just watching them scratch about in the backyard gently clucking away. They may not be as trainable as a dog but then they do not need to be taken on long walks.
Some breeds of chicken have quite spectacularly colourful plumage so can be bred for showing.
However, it is probably their egg laying capability that attracts the majority of people. There is no doubt that freshly laid eggs are far superior to those bought from the local supermarket, just ask anyone keeping pet chickens what they think. Furthermore, as you know exactly what your "ladies" have been eating you do not need to worry that they contain any "nasty" additives.
There is widely expressed concern about the way that chickens are raised commercially and horror stories regularly hit the headlines concerning battery farming conditions. So it gives many people the satisfaction of knowing that their eggs are coming from chickens that are raised in comfortable conditions where they have plenty of room to move about at will. Furthermore, when you raise your own chickens you also know exactly what they are being fed on so there is no danger of potentially harmful chemical additives building up in your body.
There is scientific evidence to support the claim that free range eggs contain higher levels of Vitamin B12 and Vitamin and folic acid. Home kept chickens, which have a more varied diet than commercially raised free range chickens, will therefore offer even greater health benefits.
While there can be a profit to be made from your own egg suppliers, it is not a great one and it is those delicious healthy breakfasts that is the biggest attraction.
So there you have some compelling reasons why keeping pet chickens is proving so popular. It may be the thought of those delicious healthy eggs or the satisfaction of knowing that your egg producers live a comfortable life. Maybe you simply want a pet with a difference and one that is easy and relatively inexpensive to keep. Whatever your reasons, keeping pet chickens at home will certainly be a rewarding venture.

Do male Ducks have different plumages to female ducks?
Plumages are Feather colours
Yes, most often this is true but not always. Males tend to always have more beautiful feathers in order to impress a mate, females have more earth-tones dull feathers to help them hide themselves and their nests while nesting with eggs and ducklings, or chicks, in a chicken's case.
