Keep Your Saddle As Good As New- A Guide To Horse Racing Saddle Care
Taking proper care of horse saddles indicates that you are a diligent horseman who takes pride in caring for his horse. By implementing a few basic horse racing saddle care tips, you can maintain the saddle in its original condition. Proper horse racing saddle care is not only a sign of pride but also self-respect. Although saddles are usually designed to be durable, any leather product must be cared for on a regular basis in order to preserve its original value. Basic care entails thorough cleaning of the saddle with warm, soapy water and a stiff bristle brush, at least 4 times a year. Then oil it with neatsfoot oil. Extreme temperature can prove to be very detrimental for a saddle. Moisture can cause mildew. Thus when the humidity is high, clean and oil the saddle more frequently.
Dry surroundings can also damage the saddle leading to cracks. In order to prevent the saddle from drying out, you should compulsorily condition the leather regularly. This restores flexibility. One of the easiest ways to retain your saddle in top notch condition for a long time is to use renowned horse racing saddle care products.
Avoid storing the saddle in non porous covers such as plastic bags. Also, steer clear of any types of leather preparations containing turpentine, alcohol or mineral spirits as these will damage the leather. Waxes and silicone impair the ability of the leather to breathe so shun these too. Other items that are a strict no-no include animal fats, degraded household cleaning agents, mink oil and grease. It is recommended that you use pH balanced leather preparations for cleaning saddles since they are compatible with leather. Always check the saddle for any signs of cracks or excessive wear-and-tear.
Rosettes, rivets and other protrusions can cause discomfort and lead to unwanted behavior in a horse. So, replace the worn parts as soon as possible. Always allow the saddle to air dry naturally and never place it near any source of heat. Sealing the saddle is also included under caring for your saddle. You can do this with a leather conditioner. But be sure to use one that will not make the saddle slick or else it will not be easy to keep your seat while riding. Neetsfoot oil will eventually rot any stitching it contacts. I have been using olive oil on my leather for 25+ years. Only possible drawback - it darkens most leathers. Understand corn oil darkens less.
I use saddle soap AFTER oiling to seal oil in. Keeps it off my breeches.
