A Whale of a Trip - Kayak the San Juan Islands

Deep within the Puget Sound, between Seattle and Vancouver, right next to Victoria, lays a rural archipelago known as the San Juan Islands. Technically associated with Washington State, these islands actually straddle the Washington-British Columbia border, and include several hundred islands, reefs, and rocks. Due to the massive amount of rainfall dumped onto the area by the “rainshadow” of the Olympia Mountains, the San Juan Islands enjoy one of the most interesting ecosystems on the planet. In an area where you can see a wide variety of animals, you can also enjoy plants that are normally only seen in the rainforest, and plants that are native to the desert growing side by side.

Every summer, in addition to tourists looking the islands, you will also find another visitor. From May through October, three pods of Orca whales, also known as killer whales, roam about the Haro Strait, feasting on the migrating salmon. It is in this area that visitors have the opportunity to experience seeing these amazing creatures close up. Kayaking tours offered by a number of companies are a great way to enjoy the serenity of nature, without disrupting it. Sitting low to the water in a kayak, you tend to feel at one with the water, and realize just how small you really are in comparison to these astounding mammals. Orca whales are extremely intelligent; never has a human been attacked by an unprovoked whale in the wild. Two of the most intense kayaking experiences are the pre-dawn paddle to watch the sunrise, and the special night paddle to view the bioluminescence. In addition to the whales there are thousands of tide pools filled with interesting creatures, tons of bald eagle nests, and thousands of harbor seals.

On land, San Juan Island has plenty that you can explore. For those who wish to see the whales, but aren’t too sure about the kayaking, San Juan is home to the only National Park dedicated to whale watching. From shore you can see Orca and Minke whales, Dall’s porpoise, harbor seals, and bald eagles. This is a great place for the whole family to explore and enjoy a picnic lunch; just make sure to bring a pair of binoculars! The Whale Museum in downtown Friday Harbor helps visitors to appreciate these magnificent creatures. The island is best explored on bicycles, which can be rented at a number of locations. Whether you do it on foot, on bike, or in a kayak, the San Juan Islands are a thing of beauty to be enjoyed to the full.

What route will I take to go to San Juan Batangas from Tagaytay?

I am planning to drive from Tagaytay to a beach resort in San Juan Batangas. Is this a good route? Anybody out there who has done this route? How? Please help! Thanks.

I went to Laiya in San Juan, Batangas, the other day. And yes, I started from Tagaytay.

Armed with a map, I took the route via Quezon province going there, and returned via Lipa. The latter is actually the shorter route.

The first route (via Quezon Province):

Drive down from Tagaytay to Talisay in Batangas, going down the Taal Lake. The best road to take is Maligaya Drive, not the zigzag road from the rotunda. Maligaya Drive is just a little bit past the traffic light at the corner going to Sta Rosa in Laguna, if you are driving from the Tagaytay rotunda in the direction going to Picnic Grove. You won't miss this turn, it is the first road to your right.

When you get down to Talisay, turn left and drive on to Tanauan. From Tanauan, drive on to Sto Tomas and turn left going to Alaminos. You will pass San Pablo City, Dolores, Tiaong, and then Candelaria. As early as San Pablo, you will see signages from Landco saying "Laiya, Life in Color". this is a good directional sign for you. When you get past Tiaong, you will make a right in the early portions of the next town of Candelaria. There is a sign in that corner that says "San Juan". Follow this road until you hit San Juan town proper, about 14 kms away. This road forks at some point, with a little bit of unpaved road towards the end. In any case, you will end up in the same major road going to the town hall. Facing the San Juan town hall, take the road to the left of the building and you will be approx 50 kms away from Laiya. Even as you drive on this road, you will see several signages that refer to beach resorts and subdivisions being developed in Laiya. Drive time from Tagaytay is a little over 2 hours.

Route 2 is a reconstruction from my return trip, created here for you if you take it going there:

Take the same direction to Talisay and Tanauan, as in above. But when you get to Tanauan, go straight to Lipa, instead of Sto Tomas. You can take the STAR Tollway from Tanauan and exit in Lipa. From Lipa, drive on to Rosario, the next bigger town. You will pass thru the towns of San Miguel and San Roque before you hit Rosario. From Rosario, drive on to Balugbug. The next big town after Balugbug is San Juan. If you are going to Laiya, then follow the directions I gave in Route 1.

Having taken the 2 routes, I will still recommend Route 1. It is easier to follow, and is not much longer. And then you can afford the adventure of taking the Lipa route on return.
