Why did the Fresh Prince of Bel Air get dark episodes as it progressed?
The Fresh Prince of Bel Air was always a sitcom yet it had some episodes that were barely suitable for the genre. Such episodes included where Carlton nearly died of drugs or when Will was shot or when he met his biological father yet abandoned him once more. Episodes like this which were dark as they lacked the laugh track and surely did not need them. I am not saying that it should have been only played for laughs but these scenes have pushed it too far. If it were to show that the series was not strictly comedy, then why were they made?
I don't think it was because they didn't want to be 'strictly comedy' anymore. It because a really popular show and maybe they wanted to teach some things to, as is most shows. When will was shot it was because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time or Carlton was a 'goody goody' but still made mistakes and that sort of thing.
Personally I liked the change once in a while.
