Under Sink Water Filter – 3 Simple Tips To Get The Most Effective Systems That Keep You Safe
Using an under sink water filter has many advantages if you get the right one. Many on the market today are proven not to protect your health as they still let in many harmful toxins from the rising tide in the supply today. Here are my 3 tips to enable you to select the best under sink water filter.
#1 The Right Type of Filter
There are so many different types around, it can make for a tough time choosing the right one. To make it easy, avoid the reverse osmosis (RO) and distillation systems.
They basically demineralize the water leaving you with distilled water that is only fit to top up your car battery or put in your iron! Without calcium and potassium for example, your long-term health can suffer and even the World Health Organization agrees with this.
Because of the way they work, the very small and deadly synthetic chemicals can get past including herbicides and pharmaceuticals.
The most effective under sink water filter uses an activated carbon filter to physically and chemically remove the toxins. They should have a twin filter system with ion exchange to ensure a high removal rate (up to 99%) and crucially they leave in those trace minerals.
#2 Price
While the RO systems remain very expensive, the carbon ones start from around $170 for an under sink water filter and only need a simple filter change after six months of normal use.
The RO system can be expensive to run as they discard up to 80% of the water they use and many still require electricity to run on.
#3 Flow Rate
This may not seem that important but imagine fitting your new filter and seeing the water come out at a slow trickle – very annoying as you wait around to fill the kettle.
The best ones should be able to deliver up to 30 gallons an hour of fresh and pure water.
With the amount of toxic chemicals in the supply rising each year as we become more dependent on them and the fact that many municipals now disinfect the supply with chloramine (this leaches more lead from the pipes), the right home filtration is essential.
