I think you cant go wrong with a shimano 4500 baitrunner. more info on what type of fishing you do would be helpful, however i will assume that by medium you mean #12 to 15 line.
On the west coast this can be paired with a longer rod for surf fishing, or a shorter rod to handle half/three quater day sportfishing boats, surface fishing. the baitrunner feature is real neat, and if she gets into it the conventional, or baitcasters can come later.
