Trout Fishing Bait – It's All In The Preparation
If you are planning to register yourself for a trout fishing competition in the near future, you must prepare yourself for it. The first step in your preparation should be collecting all the information you can get about trout. Trout is the most commonly found fish in the North American region, although the number of some species is dwindling fast.
You must be aware of some basic facts regarding trout like- it is a fresh water dweller, it is a moody fish, it is a selective eater and likewise. Having this information is useful but not entirely fruitful. There are a numerous other things you need to know when it comes to trout fishing. And one of the most important aspects of the game you should be aware about is the trout bait.
There are various kinds of baits available in the market and each one has its own utility. The trout baits out there can be broadly categorised into three types:
Live Bait- Live bait, arguably is the most effective bait when it comes to fishing for trout. The diet of trout fish includes worms, insects, small fishes, planktons etc. Using any of these as live bait makes for a great luring option for the trout indeed. But then again, like other lures, you need to use the live bait correctly in order to be effective. For example- while using a worm, sink it slowly underneath the surface and along the flow of the current to give it a natural appearance. Insects and planktons are great baits in fast flowing streams and rivers.
Synthetic Bait- There is a whole lot of synthetic baits out there that you can use as well. In fact, artificial baits for trout offer stiff competition for the live baits because of their amazing resemblance to the real stuff. The synthetic baits come in different colours and shapes and resemble different species of insects. Some resemble the mayfly and the stonefly while others are close replicas of the rainbow trout and the minnows. In fact, the minnow bait, if used effectively is the best artificial bait when fishing for trout. Just lower the minnow slowly under the water to make it look like a dying fish and voila, your job is done.
Old Fashioned Baits- since we are talking about baits for trout fishing, we shouldn't forget the good old fashioned baits that were used years ago, before artificial baits even came into the market. They may be old fashioned in the literal sense of the word but that does not make them any less effective. Old fashioned baits like corn and cheese and dough are still in use by various fishing enthusiasts. Trout still comes for these baits and still get caught in the hook. The point is that old fashioned baits still attract this fish, albeit not as effectively as other baiting options.
Use bait you are most comfortable using. Although as a beginner, it would be wise to start off with artificial baits by trusted brands out there. Go baiting and enjoy your fishing experience.

First of all I'd rehome the fish you have. If that Pleco is a Common type (likely) it needs more like a 100g tank and if that catfish is the one you pictured, a Columbian Catshark, then it should get around 2ft long and needs brackish/marine water not freshwater! As for the "trout", have you got another picture of what that might be? If it's any kind of "trout" or carp, it's coldwater and needs a river or lake, not a small fish tank!
Here's some idea of what is suitable for your tank:
