Sail Away In Men's Deck Shoes
Men's deck shoes are not just for a day out sailing as these comfortable and strong shoes are like lightweight loafers.
Anyone with a boat will own at least one of these pairs of shoes and what tends to happen is that although they were bought specifically for wear on the boat they end up being worn ashore all the time.
These shoes with their flexibility end up fitting like a glove and become worn all the time with any casual clothing. In any seaside town you can always tell the boat owners by their footwear. You do not have to be aboard to wear these.
From big ships to little boats it is important to wear the correct footwear. Deck shoes or boat shoes are designed to prevent slipping on a wet deck and equally they are very useful on the quayside.
A friend bought a pair of men's deck shoes for the first time on his first ever trip to the United States of America. This became a whole holiday of firsts. On the first day after arrival he went game fishing with his three friends. Having never fished in his life he was actually hoping not to catch anything as he would not know how to land it onto the boat.
Luckily he was wearing his deck shoes and did not slip on the wet deck at the moment there was a terrific pull on his fishing line. The skipper shouted instructions and told him to let the reel run free for a while before attempting to land the fish. Suddenly, about one or two hundred feet away from the boat a magnificent full adult sailfish flew out of the water with the line in its beak.
After some guidance from the skipper he managed to get the fish on board after twenty minutes. With the skipper and my friend holding the fish between them the others took some photographs. The sailfish had a sucker fish on its belly and this detached itself into the bottom of the boat. After just half a minute the skipper then lowered the fish into the water and having thrown its sucker fish in as well then dragged the creature through the water for a few seconds to help it oxygenate.
The others were keen fishermen but nobody caught anything else that day and many sarcastic comments were directed toward the friend as he really had no interest in fishing although he had completely enjoyed the moment.
Wearing their deck shoes they all returned ashore and went to a bar where they told their tales of capture and near misses as all fishermen do.
The near miss involved a yellow fin tuna which one of the crew caught just after the landing of the sail fish but that is a fisherman's yarn due to be told another time. One fisherman's tale should be enough before the boredom threshold is met.
